🚀 Space-Based Solar Power Transmitted to EarthLINK
A team of researchers from Caltech successfully carried out an experiment with their Space Solar Power Demonstrator (SSPD-1), which collected sunlight in space, converted it into electricity, and beamed it to Earth.
The experiment, known as Microwave Array for Power-transfer Low-orbit Experiment (MAPLE), represents a milestone in wireless energy transfer in space using flexible lightweight structures and custom integrated circuits.
While Caltech's project marks a significant step, other groups are also working on space-based solar power, including Japan's space agency, JAXA, which aims to send solar power from space by 2025.
💼 Salesforce's New CEO Post $28B Slack InvestmentLINK
Salesforce announced the departure of co-CEO Bret Taylor and Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield, appointing Lidiane Jones, a former GM of various Salesforce Cloud divisions, as Butterfield's replacement.
Jones, despite facing challenges, is tasked with improving the integration of Salesforce's core products and its acquisitions, notably Slack, which was bought for $28 billion.
Simultaneously, Jones must maintain Slack's independence, ensuring it is not perceived as too tightly bound to Salesforce and can operate outside of the Salesforce ecosystem.
🐦 Twitter Recruits Former NBCUniversal ExecutiveLINK
Former NBCUniversal executive Joe Benarroch is joining Twitter to focus on business operations.
Benarroch's appointment comes amid a number of executive departures at Twitter, including the company's head of trust and safety, Ella Irwin, and the head of brand safety and ad quality, A.J. Brown.
In his previous role at NBCUniversal, Benarroch managed communication strategy for the Advertising and Partnerships division, reporting to the now Twitter CEO, Linda Yaccarino.
🎬 Disney's Job Cuts Impact Toy Story 2's SaviorLINK
The Walt Disney Company announced layoffs at its animation studio, Pixar, with 75 staff members let go in late May, marking Pixar's first job cuts in a decade due to several box office disappointments.
Among those departing are senior members Angus MacLane, an animator on Toy Story 4 and Coco, and director of 2022's Lightyear, and Galyn Susman, who produced Lightyear and is known for saving Toy Story 2 from data loss.
Pixar's future output is expected to focus on sequels like Toy Story, Zootopia, and Inside Out, with Disney Animation working on a third Frozen movie; Pixar's next film, Elemental, will be released in theaters on June 16.
