Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison for seven counts of conspiracy and fraud related to the collapse of the crypto exchange FTX.
The sentence was a middle ground between the 40 to 50 years prosecutors requested and the 6.5 years his defense asked for, significantly less than the maximum of 110 years.
Judge Kaplan rejected the defense’s optimistic claims of repayment, highlighting that FTX customers lost $8 billion and criticizing Bankman-Fried’s conduct before and during the trial.
