🎓 Holograms are coming to universityLINK
Loughborough University in the UK plans to use hologram technology to bring in guest lecturers, such as sports scientists from MIT.
The technology, provided by LA-based Proto, is expected to make educational sessions more engaging by presenting speakers in 3D and could be integrated into the curriculum next year.
Proto is working towards making the hologram system more accessible by developing smaller units projected to cost less than $1,000 each.
🤖 OpenAI bans bot impersonating US presidential candidateLINK
OpenAI has suspended a developer for using ChatGPT in a bot, Dean.Bot, which imitated a presidential candidate to aid his campaign, violating company policies.
The Dean.Bot offered a disclaimer about its nature to users, but OpenAI has rules against applications that impersonate political figures, especially for campaigning purposes.
After OpenAI's intervention, the AI startup Delphi first removed ChatGPT from Dean.Bot and then shut down the bot entirely, with the site currently stating "technical difficulties."
🍎 Apple's Vision Pro is sold outLINK
Apple's new Vision Pro headset preorders have reached between 160,000 and 180,000 units, effectively selling out the initial stock. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple initially manufactured 60,000 to 80,000 units for the February 2nd launch, but now faces increased production demands to fulfill additional preorders. Despite the sell-out, Kuo raises concerns about the long-term demand for the Vision Pro, considering its niche market and high starting price of $3,499.
📱 Some Apple apps for Vision Pro will be ‘unmodified’ iPad apps to startLINK
Some of Apple's own apps for the upcoming Vision Pro, including Podcasts and News, will initially be unchanged versions from the iPad.
Developer interest in creating apps for Vision Pro is low, influenced by Apple's 30% App Store fee and limited initial production run.
Neither YouTube nor Netflix will offer native apps for Vision Pro at launch, though their services can be accessed via Safari browser.
⚡️ Energy breakthrough needed to build AGI, says Sam AltmanLINK
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman suggests that creating advanced artificial general intelligence (AGI) will require significant energy innovation, with his preference leaning towards renewable sources like nuclear fusion.
Training AI models with billions of parameters, such as OpenAI's GPT-3, consumes substantial amounts of energy, equivalent to the annual energy use of about 90 average households.
Altman has invested $375 million in nuclear fusion startup Helion Energy, which aims to supply energy for future computing demands, including those from companies like Microsoft.
