👀 Apple’s next big projectLINK
Apple’s potential smart home robots are being overseen by John Giannandrea, formerly of Google, but any humanoid model from Apple is projected to be at least a decade away.
Speculation includes simpler robotic concepts from Apple, like a smaller robot that might follow users around or a large iPad display on a robotic arm that can mimic head movements during calls.
Many homes present chaotic environments that could challenge robot functionality, making it difficult for companies like Apple to create reliable, autonomous home assistants in the near future.
💥 New York Times source code leaks on 4chanLINK
An anonymous 4chan user leaked the source code for The New York Times, including the code for Wordle, making over 3.6 million files available for download.
The leaked archive contained numerous sensitive files like email marketing campaigns and ad reports, with only a few encrypted, but the claims about the leak’s extent are unconfirmed.
This breach is not the New York Times’ first cyberattack; in 2013, the Syrian Electronic Army also compromised the site, causing outages and defacements.
⚖️ Meta faces legal complaints over AI data plansLINK
Activists claim that Meta's new privacy policy changes allowing the use of European user data to train AI models may violate data protection laws in Europe.
Meta has informed European users that from June 26, their public information on platforms like Facebook and Instagram will be used to improve AI models, without requiring user consent.
The privacy group noyb has filed complaints in 11 European countries to halt these changes, arguing that the lack of transparency violates GDPR requirements.
📱 Nokia CEO makes world's first immersive phone callLINK
Nokia made the first phone call using 3D spatial audio over a cellular network, utilizing the 3GPP Immersive Video and Audio Services (IVAS) codec, which enables real-time directional sound.
The IVAS codec is a part of the upcoming 5G Advanced upgrade, offering benefits like faster speeds, better energy efficiency, and enhanced positioning, unlike current monophonic calls.
Nokia announced that the IVAS codec could allow spatial audio on most smartphones with at least two microphones, but the technology may still be years away from widespread adoption.
🖨️ HP CEO: Hybrid work is killing the print industryLINK
HP CEO Enrique Lores revealed that the shift to hybrid work is causing a 20 percent decline in the number of printed pages in homes, offices, and SOHO environments compared to pre-pandemic levels.
Lores noted that the popularity of hybrid work is primarily responsible for the reduction in printed pages, impacting HP's core printing business significantly.
HP is exploring subscription-based models, with over 13 million customers currently subscribing to its all-in-one printing and ink services, as a potential solution to the industry's decline.
